First of all, let me just say that this is my first review at A-To-J Connections despite being on the team for a year. I’m not the best at describing sounds and song genres but I felt like writing a review so here it is. This new song by ANGERME, “Ai no Tame Kyou Made Shinkashitekita Ningen Ai no Tame Subete Taikashitekita Ningen” which in English means “Humans that have evolved for love Humans that have degenerated everything for love”. Ok, what is up with that title? It is horribly long and hard to say. I wonder how fans are going to shorten it? (Something to look forward to) This is the first song to feature Momona Kasahara, who just recently joined right after Meimi Tamura had left. Even though she doesn’t have the most lines, she got some key lines to showcase herself. Just like recent other Hello!Project single releases, this is one of the 3 songs in their triple A-side single which also includes the songs “Umaku Ienai” (Can’t Say It Well) and “Wasureteageru” (I’ll Forget For You). The song itself has EDM qualities to it and the lyrics are very futuristic. It is about humans in a futuristic world that have convenient gadgets and technology but they still have trouble finding love. The dance also reflects the lyrics and has a robotic feel to the movements. All the moves look sharp and cool just like the past couple of ANGERME dances. It really shows how much they have stepped up their game! Now the MV… Per usual for H!P songs, the MV is a simple studio shoot with a couple of backgrounds, lip-synching scenes, and a dance shot. Hearts show up in the MV signifying the love they are yearning for. Even though it is simple, I personally think it shows off the girls more with the cool tone colors and the almost post-apocalyptic setting. The costumes are also simple and the asymmetric dresses are a nice touch. I feel like I’m watching a Morning Musume MV from when they were more EDM heavy in their songs since it has a similar feel to the music and dance. I can’t keep my eyes off of Ayacho because she is a total beauty and has matured quite a bit now! I have nothing really to complain about in this song and MV to be quite honest. Lines are nicely distributed, there are cute scenes in there, and the dance looks stunning as usual. I actually didn’t the MV too much when they showed the short preview on Hello! Station but after seeing the full version, I’m a complete fan. I look forward to the lives for this song and the MVs for the other songs! Also hoping to see a dance shot for this song… (I’m sure I’m not the only H!P fan out there that misses Dance Shots for every song!!) The single comes out October 19th, 2016 so make sure to pick it up and support ANGERME for more awesome content! -Tiffany Fujii ANGERME - "Ai no Tame Kyou Made Shinkashitekita Ningen Ai no Tame Subete Taikashitekita Ningen" MV Recently, A-To-J Staff Writer/Correspondent, Alita, attended Suzuki Kanon's final concert with Morning Musume。’16 and here is her report!
「Alita has been living and working in Japan for over 8 years. She has followed Hello Project since discovering Morning Musume。in 2001. Kanon Suzuki was the third "oshi", or favorite member, that she has seen off and she has no plans of leaving the fandom any time soon.」
’16 llegó a Anime Matsuri, el grupo se encontraba promocionando su sencillo número 60 'Tsumetai Kaze to Kataomoi / Endless Sky / One and Only.' A-To-J: ¿Se están divirtiendo en Texas? Morning Musume。 Morning Musume。 ’16: ¡Sí! Yaaaay! “Fun!” A-To-J: ¿Qué han preparado para esta presentación? なんていうんですか?「Up and down」(上下)! Kanon Suzuki: Eso no existe en Japón... Masaki Sato: ¡Sí! Ah... “Keifon?” Mizuki Fukumura: “Keifon?” Ayumi Ishida: ¡Bungee inverso! Masaki Sato: Lo hicimos. Ayumi Ishida: ¡Así fue! Morning Musume。 ’16: ¡Muy alta! Ayumi Ishida: ¡Todos los juegos eran espantosos! Masaki Sato: ¡Fue realmente espantoso! Masaki Sato: Yo pensé "Si no me sostengo fuerte... (Risas.) Sakura Oda: Esta mañana comimos pan tostado con pudín... Ayumi Ishida: “¿Pudín?” A-To-J: ¿Pudín de Pan? Kanon Suzuki: Ah, creo que es eso. Uhm... Su voz. Morning Musume。 ’16 excepto Mizuki: “Rica" ¡Una celebridad! (Risas.) Erina Ikuta: ¡Y mantequilla!
Mizuki Fukumura: Wow, ¡Eso es asombroso! El final del segundo coro dice "We can be so happy in life" y esa parte, viene en Katakana. えっと…「You have a voice that’s unafraid and you sing with all your might♪」(野中さんに)歌って…(笑) Sakura Oda: Esto es algo muy persona para mi, Sakura Oda... Umm... “You have a song that’s unafraid and you sing with all your might♪” (Hacia Miki) Por favor, canta… (Risas) 野中美希:「You have a voice that’s unafraid and you sing with all your might♪」(完璧な発音で) Miki Nonaka: “You have a voice that’s unafraid and you sing with all your might♪” (Con pronunciación perfecta) 小田さくら:「This!」(これ!) Sakura Oda: ¡Eso! A-To-J: Hello! Kanon Suzuki: ¿Tú quieres ganar? Haruna Iikubo: (En voz baja) Tour mundial… It was the third time for Morning Musume。 to appear in the US (following Anime Expo in 2009 and their New York concert in 2015), but the first time for the twelfth generation members. They performed at the convention to a full audience and also held a Q&A panel as well as several autograph sessions over the weekend. This event also marked the last overseas appearance of ninth generation member Kanon Suzuki as she will be graduating from Morning Musume。 '16 at the close of their Spring Tour. Morning Musume。 '16 originally formed as simply Morning Musume。in 1997 and quickly became famous for their hit songs, such as "LOVE Machine" and "Renai Revolution 21", and their changing line-up marked by "generations". After over a decade on the Japanese Pop music scene, they found a new surge of popularity with the addition of the ninth generation members (who currently make up the senior-most members of the group) and the single "One Two Three" (2012). Following a string of Oricon chart-topping singles, it was decided that Morning Musume。would change its name to Morning Musume。 '14 in 2014 and would continue the name changes each year. At the time of Anime Matsuri X, Morning Musume。 '16 was promoting their sixtieth single "Tsumetai Kaze to Kataomoi / ENDLESS SKY / One and Only". They have since announced their sixty-first single which will release on May 11th. A-To-J: Are you having fun in Texas so far? Morning Musume。 Morning Musume。 ’16: Yes, yaaaay! “Fun!” A-To-J: Compared to your last visit to New York, how is Texas different? Haruna Iikubo: When we went to New York it was winter time and very cold but this time the weather is very nice and we can walk around to many places in light clothes. It is also very quiet here and it’s easy to take walks to places like the park and the supermarket. A-To-J: What did you do to prepare for this live? Erina Ikuta: We rehearsed and we synchronized our moves for the live. This is our first time having a real live as 12 so we worked together and figured out who will cover where Riho Sayashi was in the songs. Sakura Oda: We also made sure we could speak a little bit of English. A-To-J: Have you had time to do anything fun since you’ve been here? なんていうんですか?「Up and down」(上下)! Masaki Sato: We got to go to an amusement park. And listen! What do you call it… “Up and Down”… spinny… Kanon Suzuki: It doesn’t exist in Japan… Sakura Oda: Kind of like an attraction? Masaki Sato: Yes! Really “keifon?” Mizuki Fukumura: “keifon?” Ayumi Ishida: She wants to say that she was scared. Masaki Sato: Yes, it was very scary… also, Masaki and Ayumi Ishida went on… “Byuun, Bayoon!” Ayumi Ishida: Reverse bungee! Masaki Sato: We did that. Before we did it there was an airplane flying and it felt very close… Ayumi Ishida: That’s how high it went! Masaki Sato: Yes, very high! It was very fun though. This was the first amusement park I got to go to this year so it was very fun! Ayumi Ishida: The levels were higher than the attractions in Japan… Masaki Sato: It was really terrifying! Kanon Suzuki: I got too frightened and gripped too hard so I still have muscle pains… Masaki Sato: I thought “if I don’t hold on forever, I’ll die!” so when I got off my hands were in pain. Haruna Ogata: Since this is my first time overseas this was my first time also eating food here in America; the bagels and granola were tasty. Haruna Iikubo: The hotel’s bread is very delicious… A-To-J: Are there any interesting foods you were able to try since you’ve been here? Sakura Oda: This morning we ate french toast in pudding… Ayumi Ishida: “Pudding?” A-To-J: Bread pudding? Kanon Suzuki: Ah, I think that’s it. Sakura Oda: I saw it for the first time, it was very delicious but it was my first time seeing bread without shape and it felt very strange. Haruna Ogata: The people here in America said that they bite into whole apples and I was surprised to see so many apples uncut there. Mizuki Fukumura: I went shopping and I found something called avocado oil. I usually only use olive oil… My dad loves oils so if I thought if I buy him avocado he would eat it? Drink it? I’m excited to cook with it! 飯窪春菜: あの、お嬢様なんですよ…(枯れ声) Haruna Iikubo: (in a hoarse voice) Um… she’s a princess… (Implying she’s rich) [Editor’s Note: Haruna Iikubo was still getting over an illness at the time of both this interview and their activities at Anime Matsuri.] 他のメンバー: 声が…(笑) The other members: Oh no her voice… MM except for Mizuki: “Rich”! A celebrity! 飯窪春菜: 譜久村さんはオリーブオイルしか使ったことないけど、大体(のメンバー)はサラダ油です(笑) Haruna Iikubo: Fukumura-san has only used olive oil but the most of the other members use vegetable oil (Laughs) 生田衣梨奈: あとバター! Erina Ikuta: And butter!
A-To-J: What kind of challenges do you come into performing overseas? Haruka Kudo: We ask for the audience to cheer at lives within our songs and we say “oi oi” or “motto! (more!)” as well as “minna de ikuyo! (let’s go everyone!)” and we had to change them into English. It was a challenge to use words that we are not used to and say it rhythmically within the song. Ayumi Ishida: The number one thing is we’re going to be singing a song that’s fully in English called “One and Only”. In Japan, even if we sing in English they just think “Oh, they can do English” but when we’re here at the real deal I feel like we get tested in our pronunciation… So we had Miki Nonaka who is fluent in English teach us and we want to show our fans our perfected pronunciation. Miki Nonaka: I can speak English but this is it was pressure for me since I haven’t been here (in the USA) in 5 years. I watched TV shows in English before coming. Mizuki Fukumura: Wow, that’s amazing! A-To-J: So you have a song that’s completely English called “One and Only”, what are your thoughts about the song? Specifically, was it hard for you to learn the English and to be comfortable with it? Mizuki Fukumura: When I first saw the lyrics card it was startling since it was all in English. We started all panicky and thought “How are we going to do this?” However we had Nonaka-chan teach us and we listened to the songs ourselves and studied it. The hardest parts were when there were easy terms that we knew in a row. The ending of the 2nd chorus has the lyrics “We can be so happy in life” and that part turns into Katakana (implying the pronunciation sounds very Japanese). It turns into “We kyan bii so happi inn laifu” and it was hard to make it sound more English. Maria Makino: I learned English in Japan but I’m not very good at reading or singing it in proper pronunciation… There was an English song teacher and we had the teacher sing it so we can record it and listen to it for practice. The term I had the hardest time was the English word “style”… I couldn’t pronounce it as “Sty-le” and I had to sing “Sty-le” rhythmically so it was hard and I practiced it a lot. When I recorded the song, the teacher told me “you’ve improved” but I wasn’t assigned to that part of the song. えっと…「You have a voice that’s unafraid and you sing with all your might♪」(野中さんに)歌って…(笑) Sakura Oda: This is very particular pinpoint for me, Sakura Oda… Umm… “You have a song that’s unafraid and you sing with all your might♪” (To Miki) Please sing it… (Laughs) 野中美希:「You have a voice that’s unafraid and you sing with all your might♪」(完璧な発音で) Miki Nonaka: “You have a voice that’s unafraid and you sing with all your might♪” (With perfect pronunciation) 小田さくら:「This!」(これ!) Sakura Oda: This! Sakura Oda: This part was so hard and I received this part so I try my best not to stutter when singing it. Kanon Suzuki: The batteries of my music player drained quicker than usual. A-To-J: Hello!Project has a very extensive catalogue of music, Is there any song from another group you would like to perform? 生田衣梨奈:「出すぎた杭は打たれない」(アンジュルム)という曲があって、あの曲は二組に分かれて大人数同士のパフォーマンスを見せるところがあるんですけど、℃-uteさん、Juice=Juiceで5人でやってもちっちゃいフォーメーションになっちゃうと思うんですけど、この12人が9人負けない迫力を出せばアンジュルムに勝てる気がします(笑) Erina Ikuta: There’s a song called “Desugita Kui wa Utarenai” (by ANGERME) and there’s a part where they perform split up into two groups. Even if ℃-ute and Juice=Juice do it with 5 people, I think the formation will look small. With 12 people (in Morning Musume。 ’16) I feel like we can be as powerful as 9 people (in ANGERME) and we can win. Kanon Suzuki: You want to win? Erina Ikuta: I want to win; also even if Morning Musume。 does fast songs we all sing the lyrics together so I want to try a fast song where we split in teams. Maria Makino: I, Maria Makino, did ballet for 10 years. In ANGERME’s song “Otome no Gyakushuu”, there is a part where Maho Aikawa dances ballet in the middle of the song so I want to dance that part too. A-To-J: Specifically for the 12th generation members, what do you love about being in Morning Musume。? Haruna Ogata: The happiest thing was I received speaking lines in the song “Oh my wish!” I was very happy that I received this along with Akane Haga. When I sing the song, I’m always excited about it. Maria Makino: Since I love Sayumi Michishige, even if I didn’t get to perform with Sayumi Michishige, I’m happy that I got to join when she was still a part of Morning Musume。. Also I’m happy that I get to be on stage and perform with my seniors and the Morning Musume。 I saw on TV. Haga Akane: When I was in my first year of middle school, I was in the drama club. When I participated in the culture festival (a festival done yearly in many schools in Japan) I was in charge of the props… I wasn’t able to do big roles but entering Morning Musume。 I was given a chance to act in musicals and act in front of a big front. It was very fun. Miki Nonaka: I’m very happy that I get to communicate to people around the world like this with songs and dances. I’m happiest that we get to communicate because we are here today and through our live will be doing later. A-To-J: Is there anything you would like to do to reach out to your foreign fans more? Haruna Iikubo: (In a small voice) World tour… (Laughs) 譜久村聖: 声が…(笑) Mizuki Fukumura: Her voice… (Laughs) 小田さくら: (飯窪春菜さんの)声が出なくなっちゃった!(笑) Sakura Oda: Her (Haruna Iikubo) voice is hoarse! Haruna Iikubo: I want to do a world tour. I’m very happy that many fans around the world support us so I want to have more places to be able to show them a live performance. A-To-J: Considering your major accomplishments in the group lately, what is your next big goal in Japan? Mizuki Fukumura: There are many cool songs from Morning Musume。 so I want to have more variation and to be seen more. In Hello!Project, Kobushi Factory has a very hype vibe and Country Girls have a very cute vibe and I want more of that kind of variety. Also since there are currently 12 members in Morning Musume。 ’16, I would like us to be a group that shows off the characteristics of each member more. A-To-J: Lastly, do you have any special message you would like to give to your foreign fans? Haruna Ogata: Like I said, this is my first time coming overseas and I’m sure there are people that have seen me for the first time… It makes me very happy hearing fans call me “Oharu” or “Haachin” and other nicknames. I’m excited for the live and I would like to come overseas again with everyone so I want to tell the fans to please wait for us. Kanon Suzuki: I’ve come overseas and performed at New York before as well… At that time I was very touched by the fans of course as well as the people just walking on the streets because many of them express their feelings straightforward. It’s very cool and they don’t hold back, it makes me happy that they express their straightforward feelings to us and I will live respecting those kinds of fans! (Laughs) I want to tell them that I respect them. Mizuki Fukumura: Since we are active in Japan I don’t think there are many opportunities we get to meet foreign fans. However when we do get to meet them, they cheer a lot for us and tell us that they check our blogs normally and some even come to Japan… There are many things I realized after coming here so I felt that from now on I want to be able to connect more with everyone around the world. Ellas siguieron con ‘I miss you’.
As we all shuffled into our optimal positions the reality of the situation started to sink in: Morning Musume。'16 was in Houston! As we waited patiently for the hall to fill and for the girls to come out, people pumped up some balloons and started throwing them around the crowd. Meanwhile, some small clusters of fans rocked out to whatever song happened to be playing on the screen. The people behind the convention came up for a short message and to welcome Morning Musume。’16 with some cheers. Before long, the lights dimmed, the screen turned off, and the girls came out to thunderous cheering wearing their modified ‘One and Only’ outfits (with cute Sheriff Badges to boot). They jumped right into their brand-new all-English song 'One and Only'. The crowd went wild and most of the people around me burst into song along with the girls. It was rather touching. They then lead right into 'Oh my wish!’ kicking off the concert with an unimaginable amount of energy. Miki Nonaka was in a chair of course, due to her injury, but put forth just as much energy and excitement as the rest of the group! The girls took a moment to introduce themselves, and they even did so in English. It was clear that they worked incredibly hard to learn the English for their introductions, and they all did a fantastic job. They then jumped into another of their brand new songs: ‘ENDLESS SKY’. After that they jumped into high-energy songs like ‘Renai Hunter’ and ‘Sukatto My Heart’. They were doing an absolutely fantastic job of mixing in both old and new songs in order to keep the crowd interested. Their formation dancing, singing skills and coordination were particularly impressive throughout the show. 'Love & Peace! HERO ga Yattekita' was performed to close out this section of the show. Half the group went backstage to change into new outfits while the rest stayed up in order to have another MC section. Aika Mitsui, former 8th Generation Morning Musume。member, joined them as the surprise guest and interpreter for this. Aika mentioned that she had been interviewing fans before the concert and that she was going to ask the members questions that the fans had asked. Unlike their previous times in the USA, this MC section felt a lot more like the ones in Japan, which was really neat and fun. Aika even decided to teach us a Japanese phrase: 'Ganbatte ikimasshoi'. She explained that backstage, before a concert, all the girls say this to each other as they place their hands on top of each other's while gathered in a circle. She said that this was a great way to get hyped or to lift somebody's spirit. The girls on stage then demonstrated how they do it. At this time, Miki (who was still in her chair) got up excitedly to join the group and they all said 'Ganbatte ikimasshoi!' Miki later jokingly said that she probably shouldn't have gotten up but she got so excited and wanted to do it with everyone. It was extremely adorable. After this, the girls from backstage were changed and switched spots with the ones who were not. The new outfits were black with puffy skirts and some frills as well. They were pretty. Aika then continued by asking the next set of girls questions from the fans. One of the most standout questions was when she asked the girls which graduated Morning Musume。 members they looked up to. Maria Makino was first to answer, and immediately said that Sayumi Michishige (who graduated in 2014) was her favorite. Each of the other members said that Aika was their favorite, as a joke. Even Erina Ikuta said this, despite Aika pointing out that everyone knows that Risa Niigaki is her favorite (who graduated in 2013). All of the girls were asked to give Aika hugs, except Maria since she said Sayumi was her favorite. They all ran to Aika and gave her a huge hug while Maria sat down and pouted. Eventually Aika invited Maria for a hug too which she happily complied to. Aika also taught the crowd another Japanese term: 'Ichiban suki' (meaning you love something the most). After a good time, the rest of the group came out, ready to continue the performance. As Aika left, everyone cheered for her. The next section was kicked off with a medley consisting of the classics 'Souda! WE'RE ALIVE', 'LOVE Machine' and 'Renai Revolution 21'. These are some very beloved songs, especially for overseas fans, so the amount of energy and love that the crowd threw at Morning Musume。'16 was to be expected. There was a very clever outfit change in the middle of ‘Renai Revolution 21’. They folded a layer of their outfit over the black to create a new white outfit. This one had the American flag on the skirt and an outline of a rocket on the upper portion (referring to the NASA center in Houston), with variations for each member. It was an extremely cute and clever way to express a theme that screams Houston and America. Once the superb medley was over, the group took a picture with the whole crowd, which we were told would appear on the official site. From there, they jumped right back into the performance with ‘Tsumetai Kaze-to Kataomoi’, a personal favorite of mine. This song originally had Riho Sayashi (who graduated on the last day of 2015) doing some graceful solo dances during the song. With her not in the group anymore, Ayumi Ishida took over the spot with extreme finesse and amazing control. It made for a very touching performance that I’m sure would have made Riho proud. They then continued with some more favorites. The two that stood out to me the most were ‘Wagamama Kinomama Aino Joke’ and ‘What is LOVE?’ These songs got an extremely powerful crowd response and I felt like they did some of their best dancing during these songs. They left after that, and shortly after the crowd exploded into a chant to bring the girls out again for a song or two more. Eventually most of the crowd who had glow sticks that could change color changed to green, which is the color for Kanon Suzuki. Kanon will be graduating from the group at the end of their spring tour, so this was her last performance overseas within the group. The fans had all agreed beforehand to do this in her honor and everyone broke into a call for her using her nickname ‘Zukki’. It was quite touching to see, and we could all see that Kanon felt the same way when they all came out for the encore. They jumped into ‘HOW DO YOU LIKE JAPAN? ~Nihon wa Dona Kanji Dekka?~’ which was also a crowd pleaser. They were wearing their outfits from their previous tour (Gradation) which displayed each of their member colors prominently. With the concert clearly reaching a close, Mizuki read a letter to the crowd. During this time, the crowd gave Kanon a ‘Zukki’ call again, which brought her to tears on stage. With that, she caught her breath, and told the whole crowd “Thank you, I LOVE YOU!” with that huge contagious smile that nobody could hate. Following that, they jumped into the final song: ‘One Two Three’. They put their all into this final song, as did the audience. Before we knew it, it was over. The members all thanked the crowd and went off-stage. We were promised a set list of upbeat and fun songs, and they delivered in full force. Slowly, we all shuffled out of the concert hall. Without a doubt, we knew that this had been the best performance we’ve seen out of Morning Musume。’16 in America so far. Concerts like this not only bring Morning Musume。’16 to new places, but they bring fans from all walks of life together via a special unbreakable bond. We can only hope that the girls will have the opportunity to come back to the USA again in the near future. GANBATTE IKIMASSHOI! - Teepu (Official UP-FRONT pictures used with permission. I was shocked since I could easily think of several dozen off the top of my head and assumed they could too seeing as they were also a fan of Japanese music. See, Christmas music is something I really enjoy and Japanese Christmas music holds a special place too. So with that in mind I set out to make a list of my favorite Japanese Christmas songs both for my friend and for everyone else! Well, when I started that list I realized that it was LONG and that it was all over the place genre-wise. Also, it's worth noting that there are a lot of "winter" songs in Japan that have that Christmas feel, but really aren't Christmas songs in the traditional sense. So compiling a list like this turned out to be harder than I first thought. After some deliberation I decided to narrow the focus to Japanese idol Christmas songs. So here is my list! A few notes though. First, while this list has the "Top 10" feel it isn't so much a ranking as much as just a collection of my ten favorite idol Christmas songs. You can get a slight feel for my favorites depending on where the song is placed in the list, but for the most part I did not try to rank them and as you can see I didn't number them. Also, this list is by no means comprehensive. There are many more songs I didn't include for various reasons; mainly space. Also, I only included original songs so you won't find any covers of English Christmas songs here. (There are a LOT of those by the way) Make sure to check them out and build your own idol Christmas playlist! e-girls - Merry x Merry XMase-girls have a new Christmas song this year! The production values are high, the outfits and sets are beautiful and the girls all look amazing. Why don't I place this higher on the list you ask? Well, I have to admit that it's a great song, but I personally prefer Mr.Snowman to this one. That is a matter of personal preference though and I'm sure many out there will disagree with me on this one. That said, this song isn't a bad one I just feel that the whole package was presented just a little better last year. Don't let my opinion keep this one from your Christmas playlist though! It's already on mine! Shige-pink & Kohappink - Wa~ MERRY Pin X'Mas!Kusumi Koharu was always my Morning Musume oshi so I had to add this one here. I am not a huge fan of the cuteness overload that you hear in this song, but it's cute and catchy so we'll just leave it here nonetheless! Besides Kusumi you also get Sayumi in her earlier years, so there's that as an added bonus though I personally feel that Shige-pink and Kohappink borderlined on cringe-worthiness at times. Once again, personal preference here. Mild criticism aside, this is a standard for every holiday season in my opinion. Whether this is your preferred style or not, it's one that you should check out! Petit Moni - Pittari Shitai X'Mas!More Hello! Project songs! This time it's Petit Moni, which was a group that had my first Hello! Project/Morning Musume oshi, Goto Maki. This was a single for Petit Moni and while I always found it weird when seasonal songs are released as singles (Since they can only be played at one time of the year) I think this one stands out. It has the old-school Tsunku-vibe to it and has been covered countless times by other Hello! Project artists over the years in concert. Seeing as this comes from the height of the Morning Musume boom, the production values are high and this song stands the test of time without sounding too dated. A great addition! SCANDAL - Koibito ga Santa Claus "Koibito ga Santa Claus" is one of the Japanese Christmas songs that you can't get away from. Originally recorded by Yumi Matsutoya it has been covered more times than I can possibly think of. It's a Christmas standard in Japan and the version here is from all-girl rock band Scandal. Not quite an idol cover, but it's the best I could find on short notice! That said, it's a classic for a reason. This is an amazing song that can lend itself to many different musical styles not just its original pop or even the rock you see here. If you're making a Japanese holiday playlist just throw in a half dozen of versions of this and you're halfway there! Vanilla Mood - X'Mas Melody Vanilla Mood is an odd one. They were a four piece band (currently three) that played their own instruments (piano, flute, violin, and cello) but they were marketed as idols circa their debut. We at A-To-J have worked with other artists that are marketed as idols even though we feel they belong in more mature categories so we're no stranger to this, but it was still an odd choice of marketing for the group at the time. That being said this song is an amazingly beautiful song that you should check out! Vanilla Mood was never too popular either so there is a very good chance that this is the first time you're hearing of them. Also it's worth noting that this version of the song is actually a re-recording as vocalist/pianist, Keiko, recorded this song solo prior to this group version. Keiko's solo version was originally released on a Christmas compilation of other original Japanese Christmas songs, but that's for another article. This one is just a little fuller with the other girls performing as well. Buono! - -Winter story- Want an idol Christmas song with just a hint of rock? Then look no further than Buono!'s "Winter Story"! I am a huge fan of all things Buono so this was kind of a given. It was actually this song that really inspired me to track down other idol Christmas songs. Buono might have dissolved with the graduation of Berryz Koubou, but thanks to recent announcements I think it's safe to assume that those watching the Hello! Countdown live this year will most likely have the joy of seeing this song performed live! The English is the chorus just a little off (something that can make or break a song in my opinion) but it never feels too jarring and taken in its entirety it is a very upbeat song that is hard to dislike no matter what your preference is. The rock stylings, complete with the occasional live instruments, help set this one apart from the rest. Definitely one to check out! ZYX - Shiroi Tokyo Okay in case you haven't noticed there is a lot of Hello! Project love on this list. While there is a certain bias towards them there is also the fact that they have put out an amazing number of Christmas songs over the years! Many of them were singles too which is even less common. This was the second (and ultimately last) single for the group ZYX and they went out with a bang! One of the catchiest Christmas songs, this song would become one of the most covered songs in concerts during the holiday season. Also owing to when it was released, it has that fun early 2000s idol vibe that you just don't see in music today. A great addition to your holiday music collection! e-girls - Mr.SnowmanUp now is another one from avex idol supergroup e-girls with "Mr.Snowman"! This song has it all, a catchy melody, uplifting lyrics and beat and an amazingly colorful video to go along with it! If you want a fun song to share with loved ones this year then look no further! Being as e-girls is made up of several smaller idol groups, the video has a refreshing feel as each group/girl take center stage. Being that they're avex they also have some of the greatest songwriters at their disposal to write what is sure to become a Japanese Christmas standard. At the rate e-girls are going they might just overtake Hello! Project in the number of Christmas songs in their catalog. While I love Hello! Project Christmas songs, this is something I'd be really happy to see! C-ute - Aitai Lonely Christmas Most of the other songs on this list are upbeat ones, well now we have C-ute's "Aitai Lonely Christmas". Other songs on this list actually have lyrics that lean more towards sad, but this song is different in that you can actually feel it in the music and video whether or not you know the lyrics themselves. This has to be my favorite idol Christmas song period. The song is well-written and arranged, the track is powerful and different than your typical Christmas song and the girls look great in a video that had decent production values for contemporary Hello! Project. It is also worth noting that we at A-To-J have a certain bias to C-ute these days and love to mention them whenever we can! That said, you should really check this song out. Great vocal performances and the song's message of longing can add a different feel to any holiday playlist. SOLIDEMO - Christmas Eve Okay, this is the other song-every-Japanese-artist-covers-on-Christmas song! There are countless covers of this song, both official and unofficial. Why is this you ask? Well, this song is just so perfect! Tatsuro Yamashita recorded this song in the early 90s in both Japanese and English. The Japanese version has been featured in countless movies and dramas and was recently re-recorded last year. There have been all sorts of covers too over the years. Instrumental, jazz, rock, versions in other languages, it is safe to say that this is Japan's most popular Christmas song. The version here is one by avex group, SOLIDEMO. This video was literally just uploaded Christmas Eve 2015 (yesterday at the time of writing) and is one of the best performances of this song I've ever heard. We at A-To-J were lucky enough to interview SOLIDEMO earlier this year too and they are the friendliest group you could ever hope to meet! Also, since this is an idol Christmas music playlist, I figured it'd be best to find one of the many idol covers of this song. So, if you're putting together that holiday playlist, be sure to throw in a few versions of Christmas Eve! Also....just for fun and because we at A-To-J also cover visual kei, here is my favorite visual kei Christmas song! Yes those exist! Mix Speaker's Inc. - My wish [Horror] X'MasWant some visual kei on Christmas? Well, there are actually lots of Christmas songs by visual kei artists, both original and otherwise. Perhaps this is a list I will compile for next year, we shall see. In the meantime here is my personal favorite, Mix Speaker's Inc.'s "My wish [Horror] X'Mas". While Mix Speaker's Inc. have recently gone through a significant change in vocalists after the departure of Yuki, I think they were a special band in the early days and had a chemistry you don't see too often in visual kei. While this song is something of a departure for the group at the time (also worth noting that this was a single release) it has all the hallmarks of a Christmas classic. It rocks at just the right levels without being too heavy and has the timeless feel that ensure that this is a future classic in the making. If you haven't heard it yet then check it out! There you have it, my picks for an idol Christmas playlist. I repeat that this list is in no way comprehensive. There are countless other idol Christmas songs out there that I know of and there are probably far more that I am unaware of, but this should be enough to get you into the holiday feeling! 'Til next year! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
-Manuel (alavic_222) During the first anniversary event in Shinjuku for Country Girls, fans were given some pleasant news: two new members would officially be joining the group. The two new members are Nanami Yanagawa and Musubu Funaki, thus making them a 7 member group. Nanami joined Hello Pro Kenshuusei this year on the 1st of April. She had originally auditioned for Morning Musume, but didn’t make the cut. Luckily, her talent was recognized and she was brought in as a Kenshuusei in hopes of developing her into something truly special. She quickly showed her qualities and improved herself, which eventually helped her get into Country Girls.
Musubu joined Hello Pro Kenshuusei on September 22, 2013. She had also attempted to join Morning Musume, as a 12th Generation member, but didn’t make it either. Over time, she has worked extremely hard and has finally been rewarded for her hard work by being able to join Country Girls. The girls who trained in Hello Pro Kenshuusei tend to adapt and evolve quickly, so we can expect some great things out of these two. Let’s cheer for them and hope for a wonderfully successful future. ~Teepu (Bowser05) Country Girls Are: - Tsugunaga Momoko (嗣永桃子) - Yamaki Risa (山木梨沙) - Inaba Manaka (稲場愛香) - Morito Chisaki (森戸知沙希) - Ozeki Mai (小関舞) - Yanagawa Nanami (梁川奈々美) - Funaki Musubu (船木結) Check out the official announcement here: http://www.helloproject.com/news/3770/ Check out some extra information at Up-Front Link here: https://www.facebook.com/notes/up-front-link/en-country-girls-new-members-announced/970475676344683 On September 19th Hello! Project group, °C-ute, performed for the first time in North America to packed house in Mexico City, Mexico. A full report on this once-in-a-lifetime experience can be found here. A-To-J Connections was lucky enough to not only attend this concert, but also to be granted an interview during their already busy schedule.
Thank you for giving us some time in your busy schedule. We’ll start this right off. How do you like Mexico? °C-ute: We like it here! Maimi: Since we’ve never come to Mexico before and it’s so far, we were wondering what kind of country it is, but when we arrived we realized there are some similarities to Japan; such as the sunset or, this is something minor but, the power outlets are the same. These things made me think that this is a comfortable place to live. Can you tell us something about your experience with the Mexican fans? Are they different than the ones back home? Saki: Since the reaction is big, it’s fun to perform! When we said “Viva Mexico!” everyone would scream. When the music started, they would also scream, but when everyone was trying to concentrate they would understand and become quiet. It was also easy to have eye contact with them. What did you do to prepare for this live in Mexico? Airi: We learned a bit of Spanish before coming here, such as Spanish we could use during the live, from a person from our company who is actually from Peru. We used some of those phrases during this live. Let’s talk about that live a little bit. Is there any specific song you enjoyed performing the most at yesterday's concert? Chisato: All the songs were fun because everyone reacted to them. I thought, “Wow, they get touched by each song!” But in particular, there is a song called “Gamusha LIFE” which has lyrics that portray °C-ute up until now. When I thought of all the fans in the audience we haven’t been able to meet before, my apologetic yet happy feelings flowed out and I was able to put in a lot of different feelings while performing this song. Speaking of the songs, did you come up with the set list? Chisato: There is an album that we sold here in Mexico and those songs were actually chosen by popularity votes, so we mostly put those into the live. Moving back to your time in Mexico, did you get any time to go sightseeing here in Mexico? Mai: We got to go to Cancun for a couple of days and the ocean was really beautiful. The ocean was layered with three different colors and I was surprised. Also, the city became lively at night and it was like Halloween, which also surprised me. What about food here? What exotic foods have you tried? Maimi: I was very surprised by the cactus! I didn’t think it was something that was edible. °C-ute: It was delicious! Maimi: Since we didn’t know how it would taste it required courage. It tasted sort of like okra, sort of like bell peppers…it had a slimy but interesting texture and I actually liked it! Are there any interesting souvenirs you're taking home? Chisato: We’re not even sure what we should buy for souvenirs. For food, we don’t know what we can and can’t bring home so we’re going to research and try to properly bring home something. Saki: Something Mexico-ish! What kinds of challenges do you run into when performing overseas? Saki: Because the audience is very different from usual, their reactions are very different. Such as singing with us or giving us hearts and blowing us kisses. I had to keep a cool head and perform without getting too carried away. If you can go overseas again, where would you like to go next? Airi: We would like to go wherever we get invited! If Mexico invites us again, we would love to come again. °C-ute: Definitely! Why do you think there has been a recent increase in popularity of Hello! Project both in Japan and abroad? Chisato: Nowadays, we’re able to do shows that people overseas can watch such as “Hello! Project Station” and “GREEN ROOM”. We even do live broadcasts of our lives occasionally. So the things that you weren’t able to see unless you came to Japan, you can now see through the internet. I think that it helps Hello! Project throughout the world. What is your next goal in Japan since you've had your Yokohama Arena concert recently? Mai: Saitama Super Arena, Tokyo Dome…. After 10 years of being a group and finally standing on the stage of Yokohama Arena, we realized that we want to keep on making our dreams come true, so we want to try our absolute best to be able to stand on more big stages. Is there any genre of music you would like to tackle next? Airi: Hmm…a genre of music…. Maimi: We’ve had the chance to sing many types of songs and now that we’re the oldest in Hello! Project…. Since we’ve been getting more following from overseas fans, I want to challenge singing in English as well. Lastly, do you have anything you'd like to say to all your foreign fans? Maimi: Through the internet, I think there are a lot of people that know °C-ute or Hello! Project, but I want them to see us live in person and I want them to realize there are a lot of things you can only feel when you see us live. I felt yesterday that no matter how far we are, through singing, our hearts can get closer. I hope that fans will come visit us in Japan and we will get more chances to go visit more places. You, the overseas fans, might think you won’t have a chance to see us in person, but if you keep on cheering for us, we hope to go visit as well someday! Thank you again for your time.
